Blocked Drain Plumbers in Glebe

It is common for blocked drains in Glebe to occur due to interference from tree roots, aging clay pipes, stormwater clutter, and other shared line issues experienced by flats, but a blocked drain always appears at the worst moments possible. People living in terrace houses, apartments, business facilities, and other properties can easily find themselves facing a plumbing emergency in Glebe, which is why The Clean Plumber provides access to local services at all hours of the day and has been operating in every form of property in Glebe for over forty years.

Urgent callouts include blockage of toilets, overflowing toilets, and other situations in which serious blocked drains are an issue.

The drainage system of Glebe is indicative of the suburb’s older infrastructure, as well as the changes to the streetscape. Traditional or Victorian houses still stand along roads around Glebe Point road, and newer high-rises increase the demand on the existing drainage system. In addition, trees like Ginkgo and Moreton Bay figs, as well as Canary Island date palms, are also responsible for root intrusion. A considerable area of Glebe lies in the catchments of Johnstons Creek and Blackwattle Bay, thus the performance of stormwater has equal importance led to the spotlight on drain cleaning and plumbing.

Rather than attempting to estimate what the issue may be, we search for signs that would aid in diagnosis. Based on what we discover, our drain technicians will employ specialised equipment in the process of cleaning the drain such as mechanical cleaning equipment, root cutters, hydro-jetting, and surveillance cameras for effective drainage surveillance, which help us understand the cause of clogging, tree root intrusion and pipe breakage. In case of pipe breakage, we will suggest a method of localised repair, pipe relining or no-dig repair with a fully disclosed fixed price.

What Causes Blocked Drains in Glebe?

There are many local drainage problems that arise in different suburbs. The two most common problem areas are drains in residential dwellings in Glebe.

Common causes include trees that penetrate into pipes, build-up of grease and fats in kitchen drainage, and hair and soap/gels in bathroom drainage, as well as what gets flushed in toilets.

Tree Roots

There may be tree root problems in Glebe when the roots from trees get into damaged seals or leaks in pipes in the drainage system. There are Poplar trees in the vicinity of Glebe Point Road and older trees are present at Jubilee Park. With our tools, we are able to cut the roots that invade the pipes, and tough clogs are removed by high-pressure jetting, while local plumbing companies use fiber-optic cameras for inspecting the pipes to decide whether repairs are necessary. In case of recurring blockages, the need for CCTV and pipe inspections may arise to check if the pipes are damaged.

Old Clay/Earthenware Pipes

Glebe has numerous buildings constructed in the Victorian and Federation periods, especially around Glebe Point Road. Due to the shifting and cracking of old clay or earthenware pipes, they often become blocked. Old pipes and joints are also damaged at places and they can also accommodate roots and sludge. Chemical cleaners can be effective against minor clogs, but they can also damage old metal pipes. Our technicians check the plumbing and do not deem pipe cleaning as a sufficient solution. By analyzing the results, we may recommend repairing or replacing the old pipe according to the severity of the damage and thereby determining if trenchless pipe relining has to be performed, which implies placing a sleeve soaked in resin into the damaged pipe for repairs. The cost of trenchless pipe relining ranges from $500 to $800 depending on the extent of repair works needed.

Stormwater and Organics

Glebe parks and coastline indicate that the blocked stormwater drain is a main issue in this area. The issue could also arise in the kitchen drains, as blockages in kitchen sinks usually come from food waste and grease. The area surrounding Jubilee Park, Wentworth Park, and Blackwattle Bay is also prone to different drainage issues because of leaves and organic material entering the drain. To avoid future problems, do not pour any cooking oils, fats, or greasy substances down the sink, as they solidify in pipes and ensure the use of sink strainers that block any food leftovers from entering the drain. The statistics say that 54% of all blocked drains are attributed to food waste in rinsed in the kitchen sink.

Blockages in Flats and Estates

There are different kinds of residential buildings in Glebe, such as conventional houses and many apartments, where common draining problems including bathroom drain blockage and toilet blocking are visible in many high-rise homes. It is possible that a shared drain of an apartment building can be blocked, too. Theatre wipes, sanitary products and the use of additional amounts of toilet paper may lead to toilet blockage and calling for toilet service. Problems of shampoo and mop hair can be detected in homes and contribute to future issues with the drainage system. The exact location of a blockage can be determined.

EXCAVATION CASE STUDY — GLEBE TERRACE COMPLEX, SYDNEY NSW 2037

MAJOR ROOT BLOCKAGE EXCAVATED AND DRAIN RESTORED UNDER PLANTER BOX

At Unit 13, 157–163 St Johns Road, Glebe, NSW 2037 were carried out excavation work to sort out a major blockage in the drains due to excessive root growth after other signs, such as a drain that has slow drainage or unpleasant smell, appeared to indicate that excavation work was needed.

Lloyd, who is a professional in drain inspection, reached out to Unit 13, 157–163 St Johns Road, Glebe, NSW 2037, to check the blockage in the drain which is located under the planter box at the front of the property. Because the blockage was under the planter box, it was important to dig out the planter box in order to reach the drain and determine the cause of blockage. The water can back up over the fixtures indicating that there may be a blocked sewer or a blocked sewer drain connecting into the main line.

The project involved the digging of the affected waterway, determining the cause of the obstruction, and the removal of the non-viable conduit and fittings located in the car parking area underneath the planter box with the objective of eliminating the severe root intrusion. The scope of work included the determination of whether the planter box was waterproofed and where applicable. The storm drains will be sealed with geocells and geotextile to prevent blockage and restore proper water flow.

Blocked Drains Glebe — FAQs

Are there any call out fees for blocked drains in Glebe?

We do not impose a call out cost for inspections or for giving quotes on weekdays. On weekends we might charge for a call out if repairs fall outside the regular hours and some plumbing companies also charge a call out fee in addition to the hourly rate so it is advisable to confirm the costs upfront.

We provide services to Glebe and surrounding suburbs including areas around Glebe Point Road, St Johns Road, Bridge Road, Wattle Street and similar localities. Due to possible issues with traffic and parking in business areas and terrace streets, advance planning would be needed prior to the job.

Houses from the Victorian and Federation eras in Glebe mean the infrastructure for drainage systems is ancient, leading to damage. Issues occur with the deterioration of old joints in the piping system that allows tree roots to penetrate the drainage system. The main indicators are that sinks are draining slowly, there is a foul smell of sewage, and an emergency with drains overflowing. Common causes include techniques, such as putting cooking oil, food, or non-flushable items into the sewer.

In some cases, yes. If the CCTV camera shows that the pipeline is suitable for relining, the damage can be fixed without excavation. The relining process is appropriate for pipelines that have been damaged as it requires only a little disturbance compared to digging. The relining is also charged at a rate of per metre thus is mostly resorted to when blocked drains have to be cleared in Glebe where gardens and buildings will be restored.

Indeed, we can evaluate the drainage system under various places such as planter boxes and paved areas. For instance, we had to dig under a planter box to detect and repair the broken pipe in another project we had at St Johns Road.

In case of a minor block, start pouring hot water as it loosens the grease and oil build-up. Mix baking soda with vinegar to make it fizz and get rid of any debris and use a plunger if you can see the block. If the block is deeper within the pipes, you may need to rely on a drain snake, however, do not make use of harsh chemicals and call us if the problem still persists.

Of course, our plumbers have the appropriate licenses and insurance for plumbing work in Glebe and all over New South Wales. We carry out diagnostics, explain what needs to be done, fix the problem at hand, and help out with various plumbing activities including tap repairs, toilet repairs, hot water systems and burst water pipes.
