Blocked Drain Plumbers in Newtown

Newtown drains are having issues due to characteristics built in by the suburb’s planning and development of its sewerage pipes. The terraces were built on an earthenware sewer pipe in the 1880s and 1890s, with one pipe per residence. This old piping becomes slack due to sagging, therefore trapping waste materials and causing pipe damage. With many of these homes now housing two or even three separate units, the system was not made to accommodate for this.

We operate on the grid from King Street to Enmore Road across Australia Street, Missenden Road and Dickson Street to the Camperdown area next to RPA Hospital. The area is cramped. The houses are very close to the street and there is often little more than a paved area outside the front stoop. The food establishments located in King street and Enmore Road sharing a single connection which has the common warning signs: slow drainage, unpleasant odours and stagnant water. Once it is not attended to, then flooding occurs.

We don’t just clear and go. We conduct CCTV drain inspections to identify the cause and provide an upfront pricing tailored for your solution and prevent future blockages.

What Causes Blocked Drains in Newtown?

Newtown’s drain issues stem from density, there are old pipes, more households on a single line, as well as a food strip through the middle. In older suburbs such as this, most severe blockages are either caused by tree root intrusion or aged pipe or non-biodegradable waste flushed through toilets.

One old line, several households

A Newtown terrace in the 1890s used to serve a family. Today, there are 2 to 3 homes where people live with individual toilets, kitchens and sewage is emptied through the same pipe. The drainage system is not only old but is also experiencing clogged drains with the increased usage of the pipe beyond its capacity.

Cooking grease from the King Street kitchens

There are a lot of restaurants on King Street and Enmore Road and that means a lot of fat and oil through their pipes, which they also share with the flats above them. Grease in can cool and harden on the wall of the pipe and block everything after it, which can easily be avoided if not poured in kitchen sinks. High pressure water jets are very effective in removing grease buildup down to the wall of the pipe including even the challenging blockages.

Wipes and foreign objects

Newtown has one of the highest rental and shared house concentrations in Sydney, which has caused people to throw in things they should not. The primary cause of obstruction, including those which are sold as flushable, are wet wipes. Only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet, not wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products. Soap residue building up in the hair will create solid masses that will block bathroom drain pipes. The drain screen catches hair and food particles before they go down the drain. We clear them off and point out where they were caught.

Shared lines between properties

When a blockage occurs, it affects several homes, and it is not clear who is going to pay for the work. You are responsible for the sewer within your property, while the sewer main is managed by Sydney Water, and any problems beyond the sewer main would be the wastewater authority. A CCTV drainage inspection will locate the problem and tell you which property is draining into the faulty sewer, and we put everything in writing.

Recent Local Job

A Newtown Job We're Proud Of

Terrace on Dickson Street, Newtown

One 1890s line, three kitchens, and a joint that had dropped

Alex received a phone call from an apartment on Dickson Street off King Street. There was water building up in the backyard and the bathroom on the ground floor had been clogged. Two previous drains clear jobs had provided temporary solutions of a couple of weeks, respectively.

He jetted the line and ran the camera in from the rear inspection opening. Approximately seven meters in, one of the earthenware joints had fallen out, and there was a build-up of wet wipes next to the opening of the pipe. The terrace had been divided many years ago, so three kitchens and three bathrooms were discharging waste into a single line designed for only one residence. It was not possible to dig into the courtyard due to its complete paving, thus Alex re-lined the broken section from within the pipe and video inspected it to confirm a clear line.

Do you charge a call out fee for blocked drain services in Newtown?

We are located in Leichhardt which is about 8 minutes away from Newtown. We know about the access challenges in the area especially the traffic on King Street, the clearways, and lack of parking. We attend 24/7 for plumbing emergencies, from blocked drains to burst pipes, because a blocked drain emergency does not wait for business hours

The main cause of most of the blockage problems in the area is density. Most terrace lines installed in the area in the 1890s carry about two to three households nowadays and block in case of even minor cracks. Another common problem is grease infiltration from restaurants on King Street and Enmore Road. Wet wipes presence is very common too in an area filled with rentals.

Trenchless pipe relining creates a new pipe inside the old one with no unnecessary digging, so damaged pipes are repaired with minimal disruption and paved courtyards stay untouched. We camera the line first to confirm it can be relined, then give you a fixed quote.
